Child Rights,
Protection & Education
As KPY addresses the impact of economic poverty on Cambodian families through its financial literacy and agricultural development initiatives, we recognize that the greatest impact is felt by children growing up in poverty. They are often denied access to adequate education because their families cannot afford to send them to school or their parents require them to leave school to work to supplement the family income.
When children are denied access to quality education, they are not able to learn important skills to escape poverty. Children also bear the impact of environmental degradation and poor health due to poor sanitation and hygiene which also create a barrier to overcoming poverty.
KPY therefore prioritizes child education and protection which begins with children, their families, their communities, and their teachers understanding the rights of the child to grow and learn in a safe and child-friendly environment. KPY works in partnership with school principals and teachers and District and Provincial Departments of Education to ensure that children and those in authority over them understand their rights and that children are protected from abuse and neglect while learning and growing in a safe educational environment.
KPY promotes and trains school principals and teachers in its target community to implement the Ministry of Education’s six dimensions of its Child-Friendly Schools framework. KPY works hand in hand with 22 schools throughout our target communities to train and support them in establishing Child Councils which give a voice to students and develop their confidence as young leaders. We also train teachers to use KPY’s unique, customized student curriculum for financial literacy.
