KPY uses a strengths-based approach to identify and work with farmers in the communities we serve to build on their existing success. We work in partnership with the provincial and district Departments of Agriculture outreach staff to train them in more productive and profitable methods of vegetable and poultry raising. They become “model farmers” who demonstrate their new methods to other interested farmers and families in the community to multiply their success. KPY currently works with XXX model farmers in our target communities across four provinces. Over time, we hope to use this “farmer-train-farmer” approach to raise up XXXX families who are applying these agricultural practices and maximizing their income potential.

However, such grassroots mobilization does not sufficiently address the deeper structural and systemic economic barriers to increasing family income that our beneficiaries face. Therefore, in the next phase of this initiative, KPY will seek to partner with other organizations to add broader integrated responses including mobilizing self-help groups, agricultural cooperatives, and value chain initiatives.

The Key Objectives for the next phase of Agricultural Systems Strengthening include:

  1. Increase the production and supply of high-quality poultry and vegetables sold in markets and improve distribution efficiency by launching and equipping new Agricultural Cooperatives (AC’s) in KPY’s service areas in Svay Rieng, Prey Veng, and Takeo provinces. This will be accomplished by building on KPY’s well-established entrepreneurship and financial literacy training to equip new AC leaders with business and leadership skills so that they can successfully grow their AC’s for long-term sustainability.

  2. Improve the institutional capacity of existing AC’s and livelihood platforms in these target service areas by supporting and networking with them using KPY’s experience and training capacity.

  3. Increase smallholder farmers’ access to capital to scale poultry and vegetable agribusinesses, including access to financing with competitive interest rates and support from our partner bank.

  4. Increase the social capital, management and leadership, financial capability and management, entrepreneurship, business innovation and technology skills of ACs.
